Located about 20 minutes away from Ambalantota, towards the Southern Region of Sri Lanka, Ramba Viharaya is known as one of the most important excavation sites in the area. Rarely visited, the temple belongs to an ancient monastic complex that is spread across 250 acres of land and is also famed to be the largest monastery in the south as well. The temple was significant particularly in the 11th century AD when the ancient capital of Anuradhapura was invaded by the Chola Empire from India.

The Ramba Viharaya is surrounded by a massive archaeological area with a few ruins remaining including only foundation walls, and some upright stone pillars. The temple also has ruins of a white marble statue, carved terracotta plates and various artefacts that speak volumes of a proud history. While exploring the South, if you feel like you would like to visit a living monastery, then you can enjoy a relaxing time at the Ramba Viharaya. Book your entrance ticket through Lakpura and obtain your physical ticket before entering the sacred grounds of the temple. This allows you to avoid queues that can cause delays. The ticket covers the entrance fee only.
