Sesath which are also called traditional Sinhalese Umbrellas come with a long history while it had functional and ritual value as well. Today, the sesath are widely used as home decor as well as for ceremonial observances such as pereharas and also as a sunshade for the nobles. It may have also indicated a man’s status in a society during the past. Traditionally, sesath were white in colour, but now they have transcended time and evolved into more vibrant colours.
The manufacturing of the traditional sesath survives in one village named Unaveruna in the Matale District while the families throughout the generations have been involved in the process while some enjoy it as a part time vocation. A very few raw materials are used to manufacture sesath which includes leaves of the Tala palm, fibre of the cocoa tree, mica powder and dyes of various colours.
